Today, there are some options available for frame materials used in sunglasses which include plastic (often called “zyl”), and we also have premium metals like titanium, stainless steel, aluminum and beryllium. These metals are strong so breakage is minimized, yet very lightweight for comfort, and are also hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant making them an excellent choice for many people.
We are seeing that many sunwear styles are incorporating both metal and plastic into the frame design, giving them a unique look coupled with increased durability.
Shopping for sunglasses
When you decide to shop for sunglasses, the first step is to make sure the frame fits comfortably on your face. Just like when buying prescription eyeglasses, follow these tips to make sure that you have an excellent fit:
- Select frames that are wide enough for your face. To determine this, the edge of the frames should be a little beyond your face so the temples don’t put pressure on your head as they reach back to your ears.
- Make sure that the temples are long enough. To determine this, see that the curve at the end of the temple extends over your ear without pressing down upon it. (Some styles have straight temples that don’t curve around the ear.)
- Check the nosepiece for comfort and fit. To determine this, the frame should fit securely without pinching the bridge of your nose causing discomfort or pressure.
- While you are wearing the sunglasses, move your head up and down, and bend over (as if to pick up something up from the floor). If they’re fitting correctly, the sunglasses should stay comfortably in place and not fall off.
The color and shape of the frame you choose depends on your personal style and preference. Many people are not afraid to go bold when selecting the style and design, but understated is ok too! Plano sunglasses are and equal amount of fashion statement and eye protection.
Choosing the right lenses
One thing to keep in mind when looking for sunglasses: make sure the lenses block 100% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. You don’t have to spend a lot of money here in Northern Colorado to have sunglasses that provide this level of protection.
